One of the backend improvements in iOS 9 is a strengthening of app security when accessing data from webservers. The new App Transport Security (ATS) feature ensures that only connections encrypted using HTTPS are permitted. There’s just one problem with that: not all advertisers use HTTPS, so ATS will stop some ads appearing in apps. Google has responded by providing developers with five lines of code that allow them to disable ATS … Given that Google is a strong proponent of HTTPS, and has a stated commitment to using the protocol for ads as well as everything else, it’s perhaps not surprising that the company has come under flack for the move....

Following a bigger update earlier this month, Google today updated its Google Play Music app for iPhone with official support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Google has rolled out two new features to mobile search that allow users to find results faster. Users will notice expandable sitelinks that present popular links from certain websites directly from the search page rather than having to look for those important links from the website’s page. Quick links will also begin appearing next to certain results, which offers users a faster way to preview a site before leaving the search page, much like how Google Images handles photo previews....

A Google Photos storage system “mistake” this year resulted in image and video uploads being “inaccurately” counted towards your cloud storage quota. This Photos issue, which is now fixed, was present throughout 2020 and Google is offering a refund for One storage during that period. The company, specifically the Photos team, reached out to those impacted today, noting that this problem applies to a “limited number of people.” They first establish that all uploads are safe and that the bug just relates to your “storage quota....

Google Photos is getting a number of updates today that improve the editing experience through machine learning and more manual controls. Additionally, a standalone PhotoScan app for iOS allows you to digitize your old physical prints with just your phone’s camera.
