Google today has announced an update to its Google Play Books app on Android and iOS that brings with it a new feature called “Night Light.” The update will rollout soon to users via the App Store for free. Night Light is a feature that Google says will significantly improve the comfort of reading late at night in darker environments. Google says it has noticed that reading activity peaks between 8PM and 10PM local time, meaning that a lot of people are reading right before they go to bed and it’s not good for your eyes to stare at a bright white screen right before going to sleep....

Tech analysts GBH insights say that it expects Apple’s delayed HomePod smart speaker to be launched ‘in the next 4-6 weeks’ – but that it will face an ‘uphill climb’ as it seeks to compete with entrenched competitors. Google updated its Google Maps app for iPhone and iPad today with a few new features as the app moves to version 2.3.4. Google says the updated app includes “Faster access to navigation,” which includes new overviews for traffic and routes. The updated app also includes a new Tips and Tricks section available from the side menu and support for new languages, including: Arabic and Hebrew. Google also notes that the new supported languages will offer voice guidance “where available....

The dashboard gives you all of your Google account data and history in one place. Anything from Google history of searches to Youtube history of videos watched, all of it is now easily available to you as a user. Regardless, even now that Google is willing to show you what they are collecting they still are not showing how they use the data that they harvest. Upon further investigation, Dashboard’s information is still very modest and doesn’t show you all of the information that Google really is storing....

Third-party keyboards have been supported on iOS since version 8 shipped last year, but even today they’re still often plagued by poor performance and other issues related to Apple’s implementation. Today, Google has released a Chrome for iOS update that disables support for third-party keyboards entirely because of such issues. Google’s companion app for Google Glass was updated this afternoon on iOS with a few minor changes. The update to MyGlass bumps the app to version 0.8.0 and brings it closer to the generally more capable and more powerful MyGlass Android app. With this evening’s update, MyGlass on iOS now allows users to sync photos from Glass to the app for easier viewing and sharing. This means that any photos you take with Glass will appear in the MyGlass app almost immediately....

The company then demoed a brand new messaging app called Allo, and a new video messaging app companion called Duo, both of which will be coming to iOS devices. The new Allo app will be the first place that users will get to experience the new Google Assistant features that the company plans on bringing to several devices across platforms including to vehicles through Android Auto.
