Google is kicking off its annual Google I/O developer conference today with the event’s opening keynote presentation and during had several announcements for not just Android but also iOS and Mac users. Among the announcements so far today, Google Assistant is expanding to more languages, in addition to coming to iOS with a standalone iPhone app. Google Home is coming to new countries and languages and also getting a bunch of new features ahead of an expected unveiling for Apple’s Siri Speaker competitor....

The all-cash acquisition will see Mandiant join Google Cloud and deliver an end-to-end security operations suite, as well as advisory services to help customers address critical security challenges and stay protected. The deal will also bring Mandiant’s threat detection and intelligence service, along with testing and validation services under Google Cloud’s umbrella. “Cybersecurity is a mission, and we believe it’s one of the most important of our generation. Google Cloud shares our mission-driven culture to bring security to every organization,” said Kevin Mandia, CEO, Mandiant....

Earlier today, we reported that Waze has started beta testing CarPlay integration. Now, someone has posted screenshots of the Google Maps app in beta, which features CarPlay integration (a new feature available in iOS 12). iOS 12 third-party navigation apps use a base layer that is rendered by the app, overlaid with standard CarPlay controls. You can see how that works in the screenshots below. As shown in these screenshots, the Google Maps app icon takes the navigation slot on the sidebar, which until iOS 12 could only be occupied by the Apple Maps app....

Since the new OS X Mavericks is just a few days old, bugs and incompatible applications are to be expected until developers have time to run through the new APIs and patch up their apps. I’ve heard from several readers that this type of thing is happening to them even after installing minor cumulative updates, too. I’ve had this happen to me. Since I deal with a lot of screenshots every day, I set my default to Windows Photo Viewer, and after the November Update, it was switched back to the built-in Photos app. It’s also worth noting that I set my default program for most music and video file types to VLC, and a major update might reset them back to Groove Music or the Movies & TV app....

NBC has renewed Good Girls for season 3. Created by Jenna Bans, the crime comedy drama series follows the trials and tribulations of three struggling Detroit women who successfully rob a supermarket. It’s been a few months since Google released version 3.1 of its Drive app for iOS, and today an update in the form of Google Drive 3.2 is available for users. The changes are slim but something users will likely appreciate. Google today announced the release of its Calendar app for iPad, which was previously only available for iPhone, Android smartphones and tablets and on the web. The iPad version of Calendar will be a familiar UI to anyone that has used the app for iPhone, and also borrows from some of the user interface elements Google has implemented with its tablet app for Android. Google notes, however, that the app has been specifically optimized for iPad, noting that you’ll be able to search from the iPad home screen using Spotlight Search with the app....
